Having mounted companions will give them riding xp, them tournaments and bandit camps will level their athletics. Switch up their weapon types frequently. Switch them in and out as formation leaders and hit F6 to delegate command which will raise their tactics.High tactics should give advantage to auto-resolved battle, but I feel like it doesn't have much impact on survivability since my party is always in some random army and lose after fighting heavily outnumbered battle during the siege. Speed is what makes an army survivable. Means you can choose your fights.
That means you can build up to four siege weapons and place them all at once, destroying the enemy's siege weapons and their walls very easily. This strategy takes more food, time and cohesion than just building a tower or a ram and getting in there. But with this strategy you have the most efficiency regarding troop loss in my experience.
