My 4x4 engagement was intermittent when I first got the truck a few months ago. It also had noisy transfer case bearings, so I pulled the TC and replaced the bearings. Pull it out until you hear it click once and that is 4wd. Pull it out further until you hear the second click and that is 4lo.
